Our Parish Priest

Canon David Hartley has been in post here at St Joseph's as Parish Priest since August 2023.

He was born in outer London in 1959 and grew up in an Anglican family, becoming increasingly committed in his faith and with a clear sense of God's calling to ordination. After a Divinity degree at Edinburgh he qualified and worked as a nurse in central London, before two years training for the Church of England Ministry. During that time in London he married Pat and they have four children.

In 1995 the whole family were received into the Catholic Church by Archbishop Maurice and Fr David was ordained priest in February 1998, working for several years as Catholic Chaplain to the hospitals in Oxford. Since then he has been a Parish Priest in Blackbird Leys, Meir, Caverswall and Cresswell in N Staffs, Thame and now here in Whitnash.

Pastoral Parish Council & Finance Committee

Pastoral Councils were first recommended in Vatican II’s Decree on the Pastoral Office of Bishops. Recognising that Christ did not mean for priests to shoulder the entire mission of the Church, the 1982 Code of Canon Law introduced two consultative bodies, the Finance and Pastoral Councils, to be present in parishes so the wisdom of the laity could be utilized.

While the Parish Priest is still the 'power of governance,' these councils are meant to assist him as consultative bodies.

In St. Joseph's Parish, council members take leadership in the coordination, motivation, support, and evaluation of pastoral activities in the Parish to support Canon David. The Pastoral Council will often serve as liaisons to the various Parish Groups or coordinate the implementation of specific initiatives at the request of Canon David.

St. Joseph's Parish Pastoral Council activities include
• Admin
• Communications
